AI Could Detect Cancer in Chest X-Rays

AI Could Detect Cancer in Chest X-Rays

Artificial intelligence can help spot early signs of cancer in chest x-rays, according to a new study.

Scientists found that a state-of-the-art AI tool can identify normal and abnormal chest x-rays in a clinical setting.

Chest X-rays are used to diagnose several conditions to do with the heart and lungs.

An abnormal chest X-ray can be an indication of a range of conditions, including cancer and chronic lung diseases.

Scientists say that an AI tool that can accurately differentiate between normal and abnormal chest X-rays would greatly reduce the heavy workload of radiologists.

Study co-author Dr. Louis Lind Plesner said: “There is an exponentially growing demand for medical imaging, especially cross-sectional such as CT and MRI.

“Meanwhile, there is a global shortage of trained radiologists.

“Artificial intelligence has shown great promise, but should always be thoroughly tested before any implementation.”

Dr. Plesner and his colleagues wanted to determine the reliability of using an AI tool that can identify normal and abnormal chest X-rays.

They used a commercially available AI tool to analyze the chest X-rays of 1,529 patients from four hospitals in Denmark.

Chest X-rays were included from emergency department patients, in-hospital patients and outpatients.

The X-rays were classified by the AI tool as either “high-confidence normal” or “not high-confidence normal,” as in normal and abnormal, respectively.

Two board-certified radiologists were used as the reference standard. A third radiologist was used in cases of disagreements.

Of the 429 chest X-rays that were classified as normal, 120 (28 percent) were also classified by the AI tool as normal. Those X-rays – 7.8 percent of the total – could be potentially safely automated by an AI tool.

The AI tool identified abnormal chest X-rays with a 99.1 percent of sensitivity.

Dr. Plesner, from the Department of Radiology at the Herlev and Gentofte Hospital in Copenhagen, said: “The most surprising finding was just how sensitive this AI tool was for all kinds of chest disease.

“In fact, we could not find a single chest X-ray in our database where the algorithm made a major mistake.

“Furthermore, the AI tool had a sensitivity overall better than the clinical board-certified radiologists.”

He said the AI tool performed particularly well at identifying normal X-rays of the outpatient group at a rate of 11.6 percent.

Dr. Plesener said the findings, published in the journal Radiology, suggest that the AI model would perform especially well in outpatient settings with a high prevalence of normal chest X-rays.

He added: “Chest X-rays are one of the most common imaging examinations performed worldwide.

“Even a small percentage of automatization can lead to saved time for radiologists, which they can prioritize on more complex matters.”

The editorial on the topic praised the potential to take care of 7.8% of all the normal readings for the radiologists, one of the key findings of the study, but suggests that as a labor-saving device, more research is needed to ensure radiologists aren’t putting patients at risk for a mere 7.8% reduction in workload.

2023 Innovations That Will Change Business

2023 Innovations That Will Change Business

New technologies, evolving customer demands, societal shifts, and the COVID-19 pandemic are rapidly changing the business landscape. These factors paved the way for new innovations that can help companies cope with the demands of their target audience using technology and modern resources.

2023 Innovations that will change businesses

1. Adoption of Disruptive Technology

Robots that have Artificial Intelligence powers are said to be rising this year. Now that these robots can now accomplish tasks previously completed by humans only, employers are left to figure out the balance between the robots and their human employees.

When employers properly know what roles and responsibilities robots and humans have respectively, their business will surely flourish.

Now that everything seems to be possibly done online, cyber security has been strengthened.

However, since work has been almost done entirely remotely, different kinds of cyberattacks have been destructing the systems and software of businesses, whether they may be start-ups or have been in the industry for years.

3. Professional Employer Organization

Professional Employer Organizations, aka PEO, will be on the rise this 2023.

PEOs provide companies with HR and admin tasks and functions. Some of these functions are but are not limited to payroll, benefits, taxes, training, and compensation.PEOs are considered to be co-employment to companies. With these arrangements, start-ups no longer need to worry about mastering the whole aspects of human resource management. Instead, businesses can now focus on improving their growth.

PEOs for start-ups are considered to be one of the most important innovations for this year because it allows businesses to focus on marketing and strategizing their products or services. Removing the unnecessary burden that HR tasks and functions bring to employers and employees.

4. Remote Work

OK not new but trending nonetheless. This trend is real because it serves vested interests on both sides of the equation, especially as US continues to fail to manage traffic (and associated pollution), healthcare and childcare, which are all intertwined with remote work.

5. Going Virtual

Virtual Interfaces via AR(artificial reality), VR (virtual reality) or even Metaverse will be evolving. This is at the nexus of the natural progression of digital evolution and easy adoption especially true with hardware costs expected to fall below the $400 threshold. “You got your goggles?” will be the new “can we Zoom?” call to action.

Preparing for a Telehealth Visit

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth (or telemedicine)—healthcare via phone, email, video, and other technologies—is moving from a trend to the mainstream.  Virtual doctor’s appointments are nothing new, but they’re certainly becoming more popular. Have you reaped the benefits of your telehealth options? Did you know that virtual visits have nearly tripled to 37% from 10 years ago and that 85% of patients are satisfied?Preparing for Telehealth Visit

Meeting online means you can check in with your provider from the comfort of your home — but you’ll want to make sure you make the most of that face time.

There are many ways to make telemedicine work for you. Here are five tips to prepare for a virtual appointment.

  • Prepare some talking points. Make a list of your symptoms and concerns. Your appointment will likely last for 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the reason for your visit.
  • Do a practice run. You don’t want a faulty internet or audio connection during your visit. Check that your device is running properly, and set yourself up in a quiet, well-lit area before your appointment begins.
  • Write down your questions. Don’t hesitate to speak up during your visit. Ask your provider for clarification, next steps and anything else you feel you may need.
  • Take your vitals, if necessary. Your doctor might ask you to take your pulse, temperature and blood pressure before your appointment. Double-check if you should do so manually or with an app on your phone.
  • Get a post-visit summary. It can be easy to forget the details of your visit. Before signing off, ask for an overview of what you discussed, including any care and medication instructions.

While Telehealth appointments can be a great way to see a doctor without leaving your home, there are some cases where an in-person visit is necessary. Therefore, don’t be surprised if the provider directs you to make a follow-up appointment with your local doctor or, if urgent, to go to the local emergency room or urgent care center.

Do you have questions about your health care? Or do you need more guidance about your telemedicine options? Get in touch today.

Moving to Paperless Benefits Admin System

Moving to Paperless Benefits Admin System

Moving to Paperless Benefits Admin System

As COVID-19 has challenged the status quo and disrupted the way we’ve always done things. Working from home have ushered in a new reality for benefits, and one of the more tangible questions right now is: “We’ve always held an in-person benefits fair, so what should we do now?” And the answer: “Let’s just move the benefits fair online.”

Things To Consider Before You Open

1.What’s Your Strategy for Going Paperless?

The best recommendation for most offices is to switch to paperless going forward. Decide how you’re going to organize your electronic files (tip: making it match your paper filing will make the transition easiest on your staff). Then put a scanning policy in place and stick to it … going forward. Baby steps! Once your staff has gotten comfortable with the new system, they can feel free to pull in old material as it’s needed.

2Replace paper forms with digital ones

US companies spend more than $120 billion a year printing paper forms alone. That’s a staggering, unnecessary amount of money that can be saved by using online forms instead. With online forms, you’ll also see faster response times, with the submission data stored neatly in the cloud

3. Accuracy

Automated processes reportedly make far fewer errors than those performed by humans. All data errors should be corrected when discovered for recordkeeping compliance purposes. But documents with errors in paper-generating systems must be corrected and re-printed.

4. Cost

key benefits of taking your HR paperless is simply the fact that you will be reducing overall waste while saving time and money. Paper reams may not be the most expensive commodity your business is using, but it may be the most easily upgraded. With our partnerships we are able to deploy a basic online beneeifts admin ssytem at no cost to our clients

5. Time

Employers do not spend as much time on insurance forms. In fact, for a group of 50 employees, employers decrease the time they spend on forms by 84%. This is because we map employee information directly to carrier forms and is rules-based, which validates data entered to avoid incorrect and missing information. This means that when an employee completes an insurance form, plenty of their information is auto-populated and fields cannot be left incomplete. If a signature is required, the employee can e-sign forms in Ease using their mouse or finger. Additionally, all data can be securely stored online

6. Recruiting Millenials

You can enable new employees to enroll in benefits online. They can see the cost per pay period for each plan they are eligible for, as well as view side-by-side comparisons, informational videos, and digital brochures about plans they are considering. Additionally, they can log into our portal from anywhere, at any time, and view a detailed benefits summary. An iOS and Android mobile app allows employees to quickly access plan information, details, and policy numbers from any location.  online mobile open enrollment

Employers can use Ease to initiate pre-boarding activities the second an offer is made. Through the Offer Letter feature, employers can send applicants offer letters with custom details like salary, company policies, start date, and eligible benefits. This enables applicants to view all of the components of their offer in one go. If they do accept, the employer can prompt them to begin onboarding and benefits enrollment right away.

7.  Mid-Year and Annual Renewal Changes

How many times have come accross Clinets who simply dont want to be bothered with changes.  On Average 12% of costs are attributed to inertia.  With our paperless benefts system SMB can easily add and manage voluntary coverage. Employers can work  to choose which voluntary benefits are best suited for their employees and their benefit offering, and employees can enroll in these plans at the same time as their medical plans. They’ll even see the cost per pay period per voluntary plan and, in many cases, instantly view their eligibility.

Each employee has a real-time historical record. Any qualifying life event, like a divorce or a new dependent, can be made in their real-time historical record. The employee or employer can make this change and deployed  to the insurance carrier.

8. Payroll integrations

Several integrated payroll companies charge $20-$50 per employee per month dependizng n the size of the SMB. Ease enables employers to easily keep track of payroll deductions with its Consolidated Billing report. This report calculates and populates new employee payroll deductions into payroll. Employers can export the report as an excel file and upload it to their payroll provider.

Additionally,  with different payroll etablished exchnage connections that makes it easy to:

  1. Add new employees in one system, either the payroll provider.
  2. Process benefit changes, since changes flow from the payroll provide or vice versa.
  3. Keep employee records up to date with automated data syncs.

9.  Tracking Employees’ Time-Off & Performance

Ease’s suite of HR tools, EaseHR, was built to help employers manage growth. The software uses the same login and employee information from benefits enrollment, making setup simpler. The different tools included in HRIS by Ease are:

  1. PTO Policies: Employers can set up holidays and manage custom PTO policies. Employees can view hours remaining per policy, such as PTO, sick leave, and FMLA.
  2. Time-Off Tracking: Employees can request time-off and managers can approve those requests on the go.
  3. Metrics: Visualized HR stats including employee growth, company diversity, and organization charts.
  4. Employee Events & Company Directory: Employees can connect at any time with a repository of employee contact information. Managers can keep track of birthdays and work anniversaries.
  5. Ease iOS and Android Mobile App: Access all time-off tracking features and your company directory from anywhere at any time.

10. Hassle of Switching

With most leading paperless payroll and Thrid Party HR and COBRA providers already integrated this becomes more organic.  You are not alone.  We help with group set-up and deployment.  The Client serves as a QB but are not required to become the power-user of the system.  Each employee has a unique login, allowing them to enroll in benefits themselves. They can reach out to the employer if they have questions, but also have the ability to explore the software themselves.
